Covid-19 Update: Mandatory face covering in England

As the country is beginning to unlock from the Coronavirus pandemic, more people will be out and about.  In England, you must by law wear a face covering in the following settings:

Fines of £100 can be given if people do not comply.

However, there are exemptions to wearing a face covering and it is advised that you carry a card detailing the reason why.

You do not need to wear a face covering if you have a legitimate reason not to.

This includes:

  • not being able to put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability
  • if putting on, wearing, or removing a face covering will cause you severe distress
  • if you are travelling with or helping someone who relies on lip reading to communicate
  • to eat or drink, but only if you need to
  • to take medication

Carrying a MediPAL card with your reason for exemption can save time and long explanations.
